Sohni Mahiwal is a tragic Punjabi love story about Sohni, a potter’s daughter, and Mahiwal, a wealthy trader from Bukhara. Sohni falls in love with Mahiwal, who comes to her father’s shop to buy pottery. Mahiwal, captivated by Sohni, abandons his life of luxury to live as a shepherd near Sohni’s village. Sohni secretly meets Mahiwal every night, crossing the Chenab River using an earthen pot as a float. One night, Sohni’s sister-in-law replaces the baked pot with an unbaked one, which dissolves in the river. Unable to stay afloat, Sohni drowns. Mahiwal, seeing her struggle, jumps into the river and also perishes.
